Summer Reading Programs are known at the library level as SRP's. SRP's are promoted through the American Library Association (ALA), and the libraries who are members of ALA. throughout the U.S.
Each department of every participating library will have different programs, and levels of participation.
Many libraries are under tight budget restrictions, and like teachers must come up with creative ways to finance incentives and all of the other goodies that can possibly be given away to Summer Readers.
In our library alone, we have Ms. Emily who is considered a local celebrity. Emily is the children's librarian and she has the entire summer planned out. Word has it that a mad scientist may even make several appearances throughout Summer Reading 2014.
Sherry, Brett and me are in Teen Programming, and we have so many fun and science-y things planned that it makes my head spin. I don't want to give spoilers, but mentions of Dr. Who, gaming and robotics are keywords to be found in our plans.
Tammy and I are working the Adult program, and have already got 22 Adults signed up ready to start their Summer Reading.
Don't Start Yet! Summer Reading does not commence in our Library until June 16th, 2014. We coordinate with public, private and university school schedules.
Different libraries, have different ways in which they administer the program. This may be what you find:
- A Chosen List of Books to Read
- Suggested Titles
- Books Read with a Report / Review
- Hours read of any media.
- Hours read only and reviews get extra credit
- Prizes or incentives are given for meeting goals
If your library does something different please let us know.
